investment solutions and support to enable advisers to meet their clients’ investment objectives.
As a Discretionary Fund Manager (DFM) in South Africa we partner with advisers, sharing the investment
decision-making and administration with them. This partnership affords advisers time –
time to focus on the critical aspects of their business – whilst the investment research, due diligence, implementation,
administration and reporting are conducted by a dedicated team of specialists.
Our investment philosophy is unashamedly simple, “diversification, through unconstrained global asset allocation, within an
absolute return mindset”, with the aim of achieving our clients’ objectives, through the management and control of risk.

OUR
history
MitonOptimal as it stands today is the result of various businesses aligning their skills and vision to provide advisers in South Africa with a unique offering. Over the last 25 years the business has adapted to the changing world – continuously innovating for the benefit of our advisers and their clients.
2000
Bond Street Financial Services commenced business in 2000. The founders included Roeloff Horne, Francois Van Heerden, Willie Kotzee and the late Steve Stewart. The initial objective of the business was to provide advisers with guidance and support on investing offshore. With Roeloff Horne as CIO, the business boasted extensive expertise and knowledge of the offshore landscape and products available.
2002
Optimal Fund Management was founded by the late Scott Campbell in 2002. Regulated by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, the company offered a range of offshore multi-asset portfolios to the SA market through a representative office in SA.
2003
In 2003 the Bond Street Financial Services offering was extended to domestic investments – with the business providing support to advisers and their clients over a wide range of products and services. This is when the team started running Model Portfolios. Many of the original Bond Street team remain in the business today.
2005
In 2005 Optimal Fund Management merged with Miton Investments, a UK-authorised multi-manager. This is where the name MitonOptimal was born. MitonOptimal focused on providing global solutions through regulated investment vehicles to advisers and their clients. 2005 also saw the establishment of Eagle Asset Management. Founded by Roeloff Horne and Gavin Scholz (a current Non-Executive Director) with Bond Street as a shareholder, the business offered a range of Unit Trusts to the SA market and selected business partners.
2010
Eagle Asset Management merged its operations with MitonOptimal in 2010 to form MitonOptimal South Africa (Pty) Ltd and Roeloff Horne joined the MitonOptimal Investment Team.
2014
In 2014, MitonOptimal merged with Bond Street Financial Services and established MitonOptimal Portfolio Management (Pty) Ltd.
2020
In 2020 MitonOptimal restructured, with process and operations being aligned to support both entities MitonOptimal Portfolio Management (Pty) Ltd [MOPM] and MitonOptimal South Africa (pty) Ltd [MOSA] with one team – streamlining our focus, offering and operations.
2025
In 2025, MitonOptimal celebrates 25 years of providing investment expertise and support to advisers across South Africa. Since our founding in 2000, we’ve committed to being more than just a service provider; we’ve been a true partner to our advisers, offering regulatory guidance, operational backing, and innovative solutions every step of the way.
2026
In 2026 and as we continue to evolve, it became important that our visual identity more accurately reflects who we are today and where we are headed in the future. Our new look and logo capture our enduring values, clear purpose, and future ambitions, while honouring the heritage and trust we have built over the past 25 years.
MitonOptimal has been our preferred Discretionary Investment manager for the last 13 years. MitonOptimal’s rigorous investment process has resulted in our clients avoiding investment pitfalls and thereby achieving their investment goals.
